Mystery on Everest

Mount Everest has several mysteries buried in it and nobody would be able to unveil all of the mystery.

Today, I am going to talk about George Mallory.

George Mallory was an English mountaineer who was involved on the expedition three times before he died in 1924. It will always be a mystery that this great pioneer whether reached the summit of Mount Everest or not.  He was so close to the Everest before they (Mallory and Irwine) left to conquer the summit. Mallory’s nailed boot was found on Everest in 1999.

Mallory always thought “life is like a dream”.

The biggest thing I am inspired by the Mallory is the reasoning behind his Everest expedition. His simple reply was “Because it’s there”.

It is also considered as the golden three words in Mountaineering even today.

I am not a big history fan. But after I read the story of his expedition to Everest and invincible desire to conquer it, I was so lost and felt like I went to his time and was witnessing his Mountain Expedition. I wish I could save him before he was lost in the dark area of Everest.

These are the words by Mallory on his second expedition to the Everest

“…. There is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it ……”

His saying before the last climb :

“For the stone from the top for geologists, the knowledge of the limits of endurance for the doctors, but above all for the spirit of adventure to keep alive the soul of men.”

Any of the people who knew Mallory were convinced that he and Irvine must have climbed to the top of the Mount Everest before they died. But no body could picture and the matter couldn’t be proved, before the honor of first ascent went to Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

George Mallory at the age of 20. “From boyhood he belonged to the mountains,” his friend Geoffrey Young wrote when George died, “as flame belongs to fire. He lived their romance, their simplicity, their open power, their unchanging loveliness. As a mountaineer he was a genius.”

A friend of Mallory and Irvine was adamant that they had not died in vain. “The loss of these splendid men,” he said, “is part of the price that has been paid to keep alive the spirit of adventure. Without this spirit life would be a poor thing, and progress impossible.”

Today I want to salute the courage of these brave pioneers and will always be in my heart. George Mallory’s body is found on Mount Everest and the search is still going on for the body of Irvine.

What do you think about Mallory and Irvine? Have you known them before? My interpretation may be wrong. Please have your say.
